Kombewa Hills Organic Farming (Kenya) - Barnet Organic Growers (UK)

Kombewa Hills Organic Farming (KHOF) is a horticultural development project implemented in Kisumu - Kenya and London by Barnet Organic Growers Ltd (UK) with the aim of increasing food security and empowering the youth / local community by providing them with a centralized information system on organic farming.

The vision is to create a long-term sustainable level of food security for the community through providing a reliable knowledge base from a network of professionals, students, agro-preneurs and other established industry players from our community training / research centre. Registered active members of the community who join the scheme will be equipped with free hands-on training, free soil analysis and provided with the tools and resources on an ongoing basis.

Lead farmers / gardeners will be recruited and trained at the demonstration farm / garden through the Value Addition On Land Project (VAOL) - Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).  After completing the training, the lead farmers will train their surrounding neighbours at his / her own demonstration farm / garden. Extension officers & expert volunteers from Barnet Organic Growers will coordinate and oversee all the training sessions that take place on the lead farmer's demonstration plot.

Traceability is paramount in organic farming and will be ensured through an E-Traceability Information System (ETIS) which will require members to update their daily progress either online or offline. Lead farmers will monitor and collect the traceability forms / paperwork on a weekly basis to ensure it is uploaded on the website's ETIS which will be accessible at the research & training centre (KHRTC). Members will be required to sign and follow an Organic Farming Code Of Conduct (OFCOC) guideline, failure to which membership and the benefits will be cut short.

The youth will play a crucial role in the initial phase by providing (through selling) a regular supply of high grade seedlings to other farmers / residents and the community through the project, "Lets Grow for Food Security" (LGFFS). Local schools will drive this campaign through friendly inter-school competitions, social events and campaigns on organic farming and environmental projects  provided by Barnet Organic Growers and its global partners. To stimulate this initiative, Barnet Organic Growers will donate a variety of seedlings / seeds, information resources, extension / consultancy services and free training to the local organic  farming community and schools who register to become active members of the project. Registration to the project will facilitate and ensure traceability is monitored & maintained throughout the organic  growers' life cycle.
